I have tried to add records to back up what I have written for this genealogy of one branch of the Otis family. As far as I have been able to find out this is correct. If anyone has information they would like to supply they are welcome to send it.  I am disappointed that I haven't been able to find out more on Experience ( Excy) Storrs Otis. There's isn't anything other than her birth date that I found before her marriage to Andre Otis and then no parents were listed.

I think she might be the daughter of Joseph H. Storrs and Hannah Gale. He was born 1776 in CT. Later they settled in Lower Jay Village, Essex Co. NY. Their last three children were named Beula, Amanda and Axey.  I wonder if the Axey could be Excy.  Excy named one of her daughters Amanda. The Storrs Family by Charles Storrs list all the children of Joseph H. Storrs and he has the note for Amanda and Axey "both married".

Someone has posted a tree on FamilySearch that list Experience "Axey" Storrs as the daughter of Joseph H. Storrs 1776-1841 and Hannah Gale 1778-1867 and has her married to Andre John Otis, but I haven't found any references to back it up.

I found information in old books of history and old records including military records and land records plus census records and info from individuals for this project.

This is written in story form instead of charts.

I am going to start this Otis Booklet with Thomas Otis from Ireland. All this comes from ancient records, and it is different from what the family thought. It has been said that all Otises in the United States descended from the John Otis of MA, but there is another line from one of his brothers. The John Otis that came to the United States and settled in MA had two brothers, Stephen and Thomas Otis. From the book  New England Historical and Genealogical Registry (found on google) Vol. IV p165 . " Richard Otis of -- one, Stephen, there remained  and the other went to Ireland, a descendant of whom (about 1720 emigrated to America...) Thomas Otis  of Mor'ev" an officer in the Parliamentary Army went to Ireland. "

"This would seem to favor the tradition in one branch of the Otis Family that John of Hingham left two brothers in England. One, Stephen, there remained and the other went to Ireland, a descendant of whom, about 1720 emigrated to America, Whense the family of Robert Otis of Lyme, CT. Thomas might have been Capt. Thomas Otis of Morley" an officer in the Parliamentary Army who, at the Restoration "took refuge in a foreign country."( CT Men Of The Revolution, p349) (A Genealogical and Historical Memoir of the Otis Family in America)

These other referenced books state that one brother of John went to Ireland. I have no other proof except what I have listed in this booklet. There was a Thomas Oates  in Dublin, Ireland and some other Oates.  Oates was the way some were spelling their name at that time.

In the book New England Historical and Genealogical Registry Vol.4 p163, is the following: "Capt. Thomas Otes, of Morley was an officer in the Parliamentary army, and at the Restoration, it is supposed, he took refuge in a foreign country."

"Richard Otis (killed by Indians in New Hampshire) was likely the son of Stephen Otis, the brother of John (of Hingham MA 1635.)" Stephen is the one that stayed in England.

The will of Stephen Otis mentions one son, Richard; three daughters and wife Elizabeth."

Reference: The will of Stephen Otis dated 1637 and recorded in the Consistorial Episcopal of Wells, County of Somerset, England.

His grandfather, Richard Otis, (grandfather of Richard above) was of Glastonbury County of Somerset, England and his will dated Nov. 1611 mentions Stephen, John and Thomas, two daughters  and a wife. (See New England Historical and Genealogical Reg. Vol 4 p163)

This from Gerard Genealogie De LA Famille Otis: Branche Canadiene translated from French to English.  "The Canadian branch called Otis family descends from Richard Otis of Dovers, NH. In all likelihood this Richard Otis b in Eng. 1626 was s/o Stephen Otis whose father's name was Richard and remained in Glastonbury Somerset County England.

Since the will of this ?Elienne Otis dated 1637 and registered at the Episcopal Conistorial Court, Well, Somerset, England and mentions his 3 sisters and his mother. He had emigrated to America after the death of his father in 1650, to join his Uncle Jean (John) Otis who had settled in Hingman, MA around 1635. The lst mention of Richard Otis in New England is in May 1655 when he was admitted above zens of Boston."

The following comes from Rumsey Family Papers:  "According to persistent tradition among the descendants of this Robert (the one from Ireland that came to America)  he was a distant connection of the numerous Otis families settled at this time period in New England Colonies. One of his ancestors - supposedly, Thomas - his great grandfather -  was said to have left England and settled in Ireland. As such an emigration probably did occur, and as the traditions of the two sides of the house seem to coincide, this branch of the family is, therefore, at least temporarily placed in this relationship, awaiting some good evidence that the assumption is incorrect."

Also from the Rumsey Family Papers:

"Robert Otis, (emigrant) b. abt. 1692 Dublin, Dublin, Ireland married August 8, 1737 Margaret Sabin (1st) at  Bristol, R I.  Robert died before Apr. 26, 1799 New London, County, CT. He married three times but was said to only have children by Margaret Sabin Otis. The lineage to the Mayflower for this line of Otises is through Margaret Sabin Otis."

Several places mention that Robert, Jr. is the son of Margaret Sabin. I found one place that says he is a son of one of the other wives. But, it seems that from all the records put together he is a son of Margaret Sabin. He is the second child of Robert, Sr. If he was by another wife his brother born after him would also be by a different mother than Margaret Sabin but that is never mentioned.

On Find A Grave it says Robert Otis only had children by his wife Margaret Sabin. On Geni it has Robert Otis II is son of Robert Otis and Margaret Otis. The DAR records have him listed as son of Margaret Sabin and Robert Otis. Plus, Margaret Sabin died in 1748 and Robert was born in 1740 so Margaret would have still been married to Robert, Sr. at this time.

Some of the information for Robert Otis was given by Rev. Erastus Otis, a grandson of Robert Otis. Erastus Otis  b. Oct 24, 1784 Canaan Grafton Co. NH -d Aug. 19, 1860, Kenosh County, WI. He was s/o Richard and Sarah Otis. Richard was s/o Robert Otis the emigrant.

From information on Find A Grave Site:  "According to family tradition Robert Otis, the emigrant, was kidnapped at Donegal when only 14 years old and forced on a ship to America. After numerous wanderings all more or less traditional he finally landed in RI about 1720 - - drifted to CT where he settled at Lyme at Lyme, CT  at mouth of the river by the same name." There is also record of this in New England Historical and Genealogical Registry 1850 New England.

Daughters of the Ohio Society of the American Revolution has a record that states Robert Otis, the emigrant,  was over 80 years old when he enlisted for three years in the Revolution and relisted and discharged July 13, 1782 and was for a time interpreter for the Marquis de Lafayette. According to the DAR registry Robert Otis was given the job of "wagon master" because of his advanced age. He is also mentioned as a "wagon master" in The New England Historical And Genealogical Registry. But,  the DAR  seemed to have some question about whether he served or not. I would guess because of his age, they doubted it. But, it is found in A National Register of Society Sons of the American Revolution  that their records say this Robert Otis was in the Revolutionary War.

It has the following: "Ellsword Otis, Akron OH #12968 son of Reisin Prichard and Catharine (Blair) Otis, and grandson of Ezekiel and Mary (Miller Otis); g grandson of Edmund Hacket Otis; gg grandson of Stephen Otis who was a Sergeant in CT Militia; and ggg grandson of Robert Otis, who was a private in the CT Line.

The Sons of American Revolution have another entry for the brother of the Otis above and it has that he is also ggg grandson of Robert Otis, Private CT Line.

There is a burial record for Robert Otis for April 21, 1799 from First Congregational Church in Lyme CT. Cause of death - old age - about 92. This would be Robert, Sr.

"Margaret Sabin was b. Feb. 5, 1705/6 Rehoboth, Bristol, MA -d. 1748 Lyme, New London County, CT  Her parents were Israel Sabin and Mary Ormsby." In some places Ormsby is spelled Ormsbee. Marriage Index  1635 - 1860 Roll #1311111)

"Israel Sabin (father of Margaret) b. Jun. 6, 1673. d. after Mar. 25, 1718 Plainsville, Ct

Married Mary Ormsby May 20, 1696  at Rehoboth, Bristol Co. MA.

Mary Ormsby b. 1677 at Rehoboth, Bristol Co. MA -d Dec. 8, 1715 at Swansea, Bristol Co, MA. Mary Ormsby's father: John Ormsby  b. Saco York, MA.  Mary's mother:  Grace Eleanor Martin b. 1640 Ostey St. Mary, Devonshire England. -d July 1710 Rehoboth, Bristol Co. MA.

Grace Eleanor Martin's parents:  Richard Martin and Elizabeth Salter."

The Ormsby name shows up with this line of Otis a number of times. The Otis children, mentioned later, are buried in a cemetery with a lot of Ormsby graves near by. An Ormsby is listed in the household of John Beardsley in WI Census. John Beardsley's mother was an Otis and John married an Otis.

This is the lineage line to the Mayflower:

(1)Robert Otis, Jr.(and his siblings)

(2)Margaret Sabin (their mother)

(3) Israel Sabin

(4) Mary (Sabin) Billington

(5)Francis Billington (Mayflower Passenger)

(6) John and Elinor Billington (Mayflower Passengers)

John Billington is said to be the first person hanged in the Colonies. It isn't known if he was actually guilty or was framed by the leadership because John was loud and spoke out against things he didn't agree with. He was convicted of murder.  Another source:  a research paper April 26, 2015 by S. Pearl Lagua:  John Billington came to America on the Mayflower and was outspoken and disliked by the Puritan Pilgrim leaders, including Wm. Bradford --- he was not disliked by all, nor was his ideals completely foreign amongst the population. There was little evidence against Billington in the death of John Mewcomen and he was convicted solely on circumstantial evidence --- his hanging served to benefit the Puritan leaders of the community.

From Genealogy.com a person posted that they have seen the marriage record for Robert Otis, Sr and Margaret Sabin in the town hall of Lyme CT plus it is in the Barbour Report. They married Aug. 8, 1737. The children are recorded there also: Stephen Otis b. May 14, 1738 Barrington _, Annas b. Sept. 25, 1748, Richard b.June 23, 1745, Robert b. March 18, 1740.

I am going to list info about each sibling of this family and then connect it to the Andre Otis family, etc.

Sons of Robert Otis and Margaret Sabin:

(1) Stephen Otis b. May 1738 Barrington, Bristol, MA married Feb. 5, 1759 Lyme, New London CT. -d. Dec. 29, 1776 Lyme, New London, CT. His  wives were: Lois Edgerton and Sarah Lunt.  Stephen d. at age 38. (info from Gail Johnson)

From Yearbook Of OH Society Of Sons Of The American Revolution: "Edward P. Otis gg grandson of Sgt. Stephen Otis who was taken prisoner and died of smallpox believed to be deliberately given to him. Edward P. Otis was ggg grandson of Robert Otis (the emigrant)." It is recorded that all of Stephen Otis' sons took vows to avenge what they believed happened to their father. One son, Edward Hackett Otis, tried to join the army to avenge his father at a very young age and was turned down. He was too young.  When Edward was 16 he enlisted.

"According to family tradition Edward Hackett Otis tried to enter the Rev. War, but being only twelve years old, was not allowed to do so and only got in as a driver of a baggage team (probably for his grandfather, Robert Otis who was a wagon master) seizing however, occasions as he could to use a gun against the foe. At sixteen he regularly enlisted --- according to the records of the US Pension Office on Mar. 25, 1833 while living at Salt Creek, OH ---Pension granted --- served under Capt. Lord and Col. Stare 1783-84 --- He went to live with his grandfather, (Robert Otis, Sr), but eventually moved to Vermont. "To the Pioneers of Ohio Country 17-1938"  He was put in Capt. Lords' CT line for eleven months. His pension was from March 4 to Sept 4, 1851 made to Erastus Wright. "Letter from Maddol Waseon, OH states "he moved to Stark Co. OH - then to Myoming, IL."

(2) Robert Otis b. Mar.18, 1740 Lyme, CT. (This is the main line that I am following. Information further down)

(3) "Richard Otis b. Jun 23, 1745, Lyme, New London, CT. From Find A Grave Corp. Richard Otis -d Sept. 19, 1830 Canaan, Grafton NH, He is listed as a Corp, in Captain Canfield's Co. at Ticonderoga in 1777." The History of Canaan, NH 1910 by Wm. Allen  Wallaco, Rumford Press.

Richard Otis is also listed as having been a private in the CT Continental Line in addition to his service at Ticonderoga and is among the "List of Revolution War pensioner on record which states he "died in 1834 at the age of 89." He married a woman named Sarah. They are said to be buried in West Canaan Cemetery. They had at least nine children who survived.

(4) Anna Otis b. 1748 Lyme, New London  County, CT d. Sept. 25, 1784 at Colchester, New London, CT. m. Samuel Joslin or Josling.  (one record has Sarah first and has Corinda where Anna is.)

(2)(mentioned above:) ROBERT OTIS (Jr.) son of Robert Otis and Margaret Sabin above. From Rumsey Family Papers:  Robert Otis, the one born 1740, enlisted in Capt. Ely's Co. March 17, 1777 and served three years. He then relisted  and later left (as was common at that time)  and later joined General Lafayette's command somewhere up the Hudson River and served until close of War. His sword is with his gg grandson, John M. Otis.

This is the will of Robert Otis, Sr. Robert's will was dated Mar.2, 1776 (appears to be just before he joined the American Revolution) and proved Apr. 26, 1799. Wife Sarah (He was married 3 times) received 1/3 of personal state and 1/3 of house during widowhood. Bequests of 5 shillings each was made to sons Stephen and Richard in addition to what they had already received. Daughter Anna or Anna Joslin; 5 shillings -  to son Robert, housing and all lands. Youngest daughter, Sally, also received all movables after wife's thirds. The executor was Samuel Ely and the document was witnessed by Elizabeth Ely, Lois Ely and ? Ely

Robert Otis (Jr.) married Lydia Otis. He d. 1834. I haven't found a list of all the children. John Otis is one son. He was born 1775/76. It is said that Robert, Jr. had a son named Robert, also. In DAR Records there is listed a Robert Otis b. 1764 that was said to be son of Robert Otis and Lydia.

John Otis married Betsy Butler. CT Church Records Abstracts 1630 - 1920 : "Betsy Butler, spouse, John Otis."

In Lineage Book National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution Volumes 57 - 58 it states: 'Robert Otis, Jr. and Lydia Otis, his wife - Robert Otis, Jr. served in Connecticut Line as a private.  He was born in Lyme, 1740 - enlisted from New London where his son, John, was born.' See also No. 37430."

About John Otis son of Robert Otis, Jr.

U. S. Registers of Enlistment in U. S. Army 1798 - 1914:

John Otis, Military Service Mar. 12, 1813 - place: U.S. Vol. #017 p269.

John Otis Pedigree Resource Files: b. abt. 1776 New London, CT: father, Robert Otis, Jr. and mother, Lydia, spouse: Betsy Butler, child: Isaac.

Index of AWARDS ON CLAIMS OF THE SOLDIERS OF THE WAR OF 1812 STRANDER - PALMER BY Holice and Debbie: John Otis - Ellisburg, NY $57.00.

Family Search: Daughters of 1812: John Otis - Pension - Military: Unit Capt. Lewis Torrance's Co. NY mil.

After a lot of searching I have found that this John Otis, son of Robert Otis Jr. and Lydia  Otis  was father of:

Aurilla Otis,    b. 1798 New London, CT

Andre Otis,     b. 1800 New London, CT

Franklin Otis,  b. 1804 NY

Isaac Otis,      b. 1808 NY

Robert Otis     b. about 1810

Julia Otis.        b. in NY

1800 CT census:

John Otis 1001010010000

This shows 1 male under 10 yrs. 1 male 45 and under, 1 female under 10, 1 female 45 and under. This could be; Andre b. 1800 an infant, John Otis 45 and under, Aurillia Otis under 10 and Betsy Otis 45 and under.

It has taken a lot of searching to prove which John was the father of Andre Otis - the line that I am following. So far we have listed:

Richard Otis, England

Thomas Otis b. England moved to Ireland (brother of John Otis and Richard Otis

Thomas Otis, Jr. Ireland

Robert Otis, Sr. Ireland went to USA wife: Margaret Sabin

Robert Otis, Jr. b. CT, wife Lydia Otis

John Otis b. 1800 CT. wife Betsy Butler Otis

In the two Vol. book: A Genealogical and Historical Memoir Of The Otis Family In America by William Otis printed in 1925 is listed an Andre Otis with siblings: Aurilla, Franklin, Isaac, Robert, Julia and some unknown. Franklin has long been thought to be the brother of Andre and they were found living near each other in NY and WI. The problem in the book by William Otis is the wrong parents are listed. The John listed as the father wasn't born until 1790. Andre was born in 1800 so this John couldn't be the right one.

The book does list Franklin being married and his children but no more is said about Andre. The family records show that it is the Franklin that was born in 1804 in CT and moved to Stevens Point, WI about the same time as Andre and Experience did. The book also lists more info on the brother, Robert.

T#2388 in the book by William Otis is:

Franklin Otis married ___

Children: Helen, John, Julia, Isaac, Lovina and James Franklin. Note these are the same children listed for Franklin and Lydia Otis in WI in the census records

Now I am going to present info on Andre Otis and each of his siblings, the children of John Otis and Betsy Butler.

  • AURILLA OTIS
  •  It has been hard to pin this one down, but I have these references to use: Aurilla  Otis married Charles Beardsley and lived in Au Sable, Clinton, NY. The CT  Nutmegger Vol. 17 lists family chart #958-5: Otis - Ottis "Aurilla (Charles Beardsley)."

  • Also from the boards.ancestry.com from Tina Smith," Charles Beardsley married first Aurilla Otis. Their son was John O. Beardsley. Charles married second Eleanor White". On Wikitree: Eleanor White Beardsley and Charles had nine children. The first one listed is Alvah S. Beardsley then  Joshua White Beardsley, James M. Beardsley, Jehiel Beardsley, Corydon Libby Beardsley, Jerome Curtis B. Beardsley, Josiah Beardsley, Susan Beardsley and David B. Beardsley.

  • The first four children of Charles Beardsley must have been by his first wife Aurillia Otis.  Mary Ann, Elizabeth, Charles and John O. Beardsley.
  • Aurilla's tombstone in the Old River View Cemetery, Clintonville, town of Au Sable, Clinton, NY. has this written on the stone: " Aurrilia wife of Charles Beardsley who died August 28 AD 1824 aged 26 years/5months/9days. Beauty with all its charms must fade; and death must close the scene; But virtues like hers in darkest shade; Bloom in Immortal --" (last word worn beyond reading).
  •
  •  On Wiki.com someone posted the information that Aurillia Beardsley, wife of Charles Beardsley, is buried near Charles' parents: Emanuel and Clotilda (Hosford) Beardsley. They are all three buried in Old River View Cemetery. I found in one place that a Marianna is Charles' first wife, but according to these burial records it was Aurilla Otis. I looked up the cemetery records and found that Aurillia Beardsley is buried beside Emanuel and Clotilda Beardsley.
  • Another record shows Aurilla was born March 19, 1798. That would make the age at death listed above fit for this Aurilla. Charles and Aurilla Beardsley's son, John. O. Beardsley, was born Feb. 16, 1823 Clinton, NY. He died September 8, 1900 in Trimbelle, WI.

  • John Beardsley s/o Aurillia married Helen M. Otis who was born April 16, 1829. They married November 23, 1848 in Bradford, Rock Co. WI and she died May 13, 1908 in Trimbelle, WI. Helen was the daughter of Franklin Otis and Lydia Beardsley Otis. (Franklin: brother of Andre Otis and also brother of Aurillia)

  • War Records show: "John Beardsley claimed residence in River Falls, (Wisconsin) when he enlisted 3/9/1865 as a Corporal (Civil War). He served Wisconsin Enlisted G Company of the 50th Infantry Regiment of Wisconsin. He was mustered out on 07, May, 1866.
  • John filed for an invalid pension on July 14, 1890, application #810.231, certificate #555.380 from the state of Wisconsin. His widow, Helen M. Beardsley, filed for his death benefit on Oct. 22, 1900, application #728.758, certificate # 649.688 from the state of Wisconsin.

  • Source: Ancestry.com; Search for John Beardsley; Military Records: Civil War Pension Index, Images on-line and the Full Context of American Civil War Soldiers.
  • An affidavit completed by John Beardsley's half brother, Alvah, (placed in John Beardsley's Civil War File) states that he remembers John at the age of 9 or 10 when they resided in Clinton County, NY. John Beardsley moved at the age of 20 or 21 to PA for about 2 1/2 years, then moved to Rock County, Wisconsin. (from Tina Smith from John Beardsley's Civil War Files. She has copies of the original files.)
  • Phebe Redfield was another person that gave an affidavit for John Beardsley. This would be Phoebe Storrs Otis daughter of Andre and Excy Otis.

  • This shows that John O. Beardsley was the half brother of Alvah so it is proof that they didn’t have the same mother.
  • ( "Alvah Beardsley is buried in Trimbelle Cem. Trimbelle Township Pierce Co. WI.")

  • John Beardsley, as shown from these records, is Aurilla Otis' son. I have seen indications that three other children of Charles Beardsley are Aurilla's.  There are three that were born before John O. Beardsley. The others born after John are by the wife, Eleanor White.

  • The 1860 Federal Census Wisconsin, Pierce County, Trimbelle:
  •                    John Beardsley age 37

                       Helen Beardsley age 31

                       Sheldon Beardsley age 10

                       Elizabeth Beardsley age 14

                       Isaac Beardsley age 5

                       Charles Beardsley age 1

Charles Beardsley age 63 (father of John)

                       Robert Ormsby age 37

Here is a more complete list of John O. Beardsley and Helen       Ot   i        Beardsley's children:

    (1)Sheldon Timothy Beardsley b. Nov.16, 1849 WI d. aft July 1898, m. Eva Laurilla White b. Jan.29, 1854 MA m. July 16, 1871 Pierce  Co, WI. She d Aug. 30,1926 Los Angeles CA.

A Memorial to Helen Otis Beardsley states "... she is a daughter of "Uncle Frank" Otis ...born in NY ... moving with her parents to Penn. and Ohio thense to Rock County, WI." Helen moved with her parents to Penn.  and Ohio then to Rock County, WI about 1847.

    FRANKLIN OTIS

Andre Otis' brother, Franklin Otis, date of birth is listed on several census records. In the 1850 WI Census it lists Franklin  as born in CT and at that time living in Rock, WI. In the 1870 Census in WI he is listed as born 1804 in CT. In the 1880 Census in WI his birth is listed as 1804 in CT and he was living in 1880 in Trimbelle WI at age 76 in the household of his son-in-law, John Beardsley. His mother was born in CT.

Franklin Otis and his wife show up in records in NY. This concerns inherited property. Franklin's wife is Lydia Beardsley. This deed is as follows:

History of Northern Wisconsin , El Paso, O.C. Whitren, M.B.Williams   History of Pierce Co.  Its Cities, Villages and Towns:

"Trimbelle Township was created March 2, 1855. Martin B. Williams was elected its first Chairman and Aaron Cornelison and Franklin Otis were Supervisors. John Beardsley was among the early settlers."

History of Washington County and the St. Croix Valley (Pierce County Chapter xlii)

"... at the same meeting a petition was presented for a new town with the following boundaries: Township 26, range 18; to be known as the town of Trimbelle; first election to be held at the house of F. Otis."

I found this in a book of Wisconsin History: Historical Sketch Of The town of Spring Lake p103, " I passed through Trimbelle village, where Uncle Franklin Otis helped me get one subscriber, a paying one ..."

pg. 175, John W. Winn's Story:  "There were few politicians at that early time ---. It was, but a short while until recruits came a plenty. Among those was Uncle Otis of Trimbelle."

pg. 31 "John Beardsley came to Prescott in June 1853. There were no buildings on Prescott hill at that time. Franklin Otis came in at the same time  he did. There was no school house there then. Franklin Otis built the school house in the area the same year. (Note: this was the present town of Trimbelle). So far as I know that was the first school in the county.  There was one sawmill .... In 1855 Franklin Otis built a grist mill on the Trimbelle."

"When John Beardsley came to Trimbelle in 1853 it was all government land. There was but one settler here - Mr. Cornelison. The country was very wild -- plenty fine trout in the Trimbelle but no other fish. Deer and bears were plentiful and further east in the Big Woods there were elk. John McLaughlin came to Trimbelle in 1853. He was a great hunter and was, also a land surveyor. Franklin Otis ------ was one of the men that came with John McLaughlin."

Civil War Northwest Wisconsin 1862 Aug. 20: Pierce Co. War Meeting At Martell:

"On Thursday inst. We attended a war meeting which was universally attended. Franklin Otis of Trimbelle was called to the chair, and Ole Rasmason chosen Secretary.."

The Otises in this line stayed involved in the communities that they lived in. From the First Annual Review of Pierce Co. WI:

"The first settlers in town of Trimbelle were Aaron Cornelison, H.E. McAllister and John Lynch, they having settled here 3 years ago the past summer. The next, Mr. Franklin Otis, well known in the history of this town, commenced his improvements where he now lives, and it seems to be the central point within the town, and is well situated for a thriving village.--- within the town have been improved the past summer 300 acres of land, and 400 more broken and ready for a spring crop."  I wonder how they could clear and get that many acres of land ready in such a short time, but that is what the record says.

          Isaac Otis

Isaac Otis was born 1808. He is listed in the Memorial of the Otis Family in America by William Otis as brother of Aurilla, Andre, Franklin, Robert and Julia.  Isaac Otis was born in 1808. He  left NY at an early age and went to Ashtabula, OH and married Harriet Cornell.

Isaac Otis and wife, Harriet Cornell, had a daughter born in OH named Esther Otis. She became a member of the Daughters of 1812.  The listing in the Daughters of 1812 Book of Ohio show that she  qualified to be a member. Her lineage was as follows:

"Parents: Isaac Otis and Harriet Cornell

Grandparents: John Otis and Betsy Butler

    Great grandfather: Robert Otis

The records show John Otis as a vet of the War of 1812 in NY."

This shows Isaac as being son of John Otis and Betsy Butler.

         Robert Otis

Robert Otis is listed in the book: "Memoir of the Otis Family in America" by William Otis as the brother of Andre. The book has a little further information on him. He moved to Trumbull, OH in the same area as the Isaac above. ( He lived there from 1847 to about 1865 in Johnston Township according to James K. Buell’s "History of Johnston Township, Trumbull, OH" (Canton, OH 1922). Robert Otis was a justice of peace and an insurance agent.

So far it has been shown that John Otis and Betsy Butler are the parents of Aurilla, Franklin, Isaac and Robert Otis. There's further proof about Robert below.

From the book "History of Boone Co. Iowa Vol. 2:

"Charles Otis is one of the active business men of Boone. Conducting an extensive lumberyard of which he has been a sole proprietor since 1906 ---owner of excellent farming property --- born in Michigan July 17, 1874 son of Henry H. and Mary L. Bascom Otis.

"Charles Otis volunteered for services in Spanish - American War CO I, 52 Infantry - mustered out 1898 - splendid success in lumber business. Also had farming interest including 300 acre tract with one hundred acres in other tracts.. Charles m. May 4, 1899 Mary C. Zimbelman native of Boone Co. Iowa."

    They had two children: "Louise b. April 6, 1901, Warren F. b Aug. 30, 1902."

"Charle's father (Henry H. Otis) who passed away May 17, 1913 for a long period an honored resident of Iowa, born June 21, 1838 Ashtabula Co, OH son of Robert Otis a native of NY and a grandson of John Otis who became an early resident of Empire St and removed to OH but afterward became a resident of PA where his death occurred 1846." (says Revolutionary War Vet but it was 1812 Vet.) The family is of Scotch-Irish lineage. (Another place has his death 1843, Trimbelle, WI.) I haven't been able to find a grave at either place.

"Henry H. Otis (son of Robert Otis native of NY) supplemented public school training by study in Western Seminary at West Farmington, OH. During Civil War joined the Union army May 29, 1862 Co. b. 87th Reg. OH Volunteers - transferred to 13th OH Infantry at Harpers Ferry Sept 12, 1862 - rank Captain.

After war Henry H. Otis engaged in insurance business - later Commercial Traveler and then began farming in Trumbull, OH where he remained from spring 1866 til 1872. Then he hosted a hotel and livery barn - Kent Co MI - in 1876 established his home in Harrison township. Boone Co, Iowa. Three years later removed to a farm in Des Moines - later yrs. dairy business."

Henry H. Otis and wife Mary L. Bascom had four children:

         Caroline N. lived in Davenport

Lucy R. wife of Geo. M. Chapin of Miles City, Mt

         Charles of Boone, Iowa

         Frank of Boone, Iowa

        JULIA OTIS

Julia Otis is listed in the book "Memoir of the Otis Family in America" by William Otis as the sister of Aurilla, Andre, Franklin, Isaac and Robert Otis.Below is copies of the information from the book by William Otis

    ANDRE

First I want to show that Andre John Otis

is the son of John Otis and Betsy Butler. I've also seen the name written John Andre Otis.

    "DAR member Jennie S. Buck Nat'l #133419 Ancestor # A084848 - Jacob Beedle

    1st wife Caroline Otis b. 14 Feb. 1840 -d Jun. 11, 1872 m. Oct. 5, 1855

Wife: Experience Storrs b. Serena, NY -d Nov. 1886

John Andrae was child of John Otis and wife Betsey Butler

John Otis was child of Robert Otis, Jr. b. 1740 and wife Lydia m. 1763"

Andre Otis was born February 25, 1800 in New London, CT. Andre died October 25, 1882 in Trimbelle, Pierce, WI. His burial was in Forest Cemetery, Stevens Point, Portage WI.

Andre married Experience (Excy) Storrs about 1824 in Essex, NY. Some reports say it was 1826. Experience was born May 25, 1805. Jay, Clinton, NY and died Nov. 13, 1887 in Steven Point, Portage, WI. The burial was November 15, 1887 in Forest Cemetery, Stevens Point Portage, WI. One report says she was buried in Episcopal Cemetery - Rev. Frame - Presbyterian Church - conducted the service.

The obituary states that Excy was a member of the Baptist Church. She married Andre when she was 19 years old. The obituary shows that Excy was survived by one son in Winona, daughter in Trimbelle and daughter, Phoebe in Stevens Point.(That son would have been Derwin Nathaniel Otis.)

In most lists nine children are listed for Andre and Excy Storrs Otis, but I have found information that a

    (1) daughter was born between 1826 and 1829. Her name is unknown and she was born in Saranac, NY. She died as an infant. This came from another person researching this family

    (2) Joseph S. Otis was born April 13, 1830 in NY and died Jan. 25, 1839 in Saranac, Clinton, NY. Burial was in Saranac Hollow Cemetery, known now as Independance, 1839.

    (3) Juliann Otis was born July 14, 1832, NY and died January 25, 1839 in Saranac, Clinton, NY. Burial was in Saranac Hollow Cemetery.

    (4) William S. Otis was born October 7, 1834 NY and died January 25, 1839 in Saranac, Clinton, NY. Burial was in Saranac Hollow Cemetery.

    (5) Franklin Otis was born October 17, 1836 NY and died January 25, 1839 in Saranac, Clinton, NY. Burial was in Saranac Hollow Cemetery.

    (6) Phoebe Storrs Otis b. August 27, 1837 in Clinton, NY died February 6, 1924 in Stevens Point, Portage, WI.

    (7) One report says a son was born after Phoebe around 1840. He must have died as an infant.

    (8) Caroline Otis was born 1842 in NY.

    (9) Henry Otis was born in PA

    (10) Amanda Otis was born in 1848 in WI.

    (11) Derwin Nathaniel Otis was born in 1851 in WI.

Joseph S. Otis, Juliann Otis, William S. Otis and Franklin Otis listed above were all consumed in a house fire. They have a memorial marker in the Saranac Hollow (Independence) Cemetery bearing all four names with dates of birth and death and the name of their parents: Andre and Excy Otis. This verse is also on the stone:

"Ere sin could blast, or sorrow fade

    Death came with tender care

The opening buds to heaven conveys

    And bade them blossom there."

From the Spectator newspaper in the Melancholy Disaster column

    Feb. 07, 1839, NY

"A gentleman has just called at our office and enformed us that last evening the house of Andre Otis of Saranac was burned and four of his children consumed by fire." --Plattsburg Whig:

    Otis Children:

Melancholy Disaster. The Plattsbough Republican of the 2d inst. says "On the evening of the 25th ult. One of the most melancholy and heart-rending accidents occurred in the town of Saranac, in this county, which it is never fallen to our lot to record. Mr. Andrew Otis, a respectable inhabitant of that town, and his wife left their dwelling in the early part of the evening, to attend a religious meeting, about a mile and a half distance --- leaving their children, four in number, (the eldest between 12 and 13 --- MY NOTE: The oldest was 9 --- and the youngest about 3 years of age) at home. --- During the absence of the parents, and after the children had retired, the house took fire; and before it was discovered by the neighbors, it had made such progress as to render all attempts to extinguish it, or save the sleeping children, utterly fruitless. The wretched parents arrived only in time to witness the smoldering ruins of their late happy dwelling, in the midst which lay the blackened and disfigured bodies of their little family. We are unable to describe the appaling spectacle that was here presented to the beholder; nor can words convey any idea of the agony of the unfortunate parents. The most stern and adamantive heart would have melted in sympathy at hearing their cries mingled with the noise of the crackling flames which was consuming all that could bind them to earth. (Wed. The house wOn a bitter cold night in the winter 1839 Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Otis who resided on the hill west of the hollow attended a prayer meeting at the Hollow, and left their children at home in bed. In their absence the house caught fire. E. Kimbell and Geo. Davis were first on the as completely enveloped in flames and between the timbers they saw the lifeless and charred forms of the children. When Mrs. Otis arrived she exclaimed, "In the

Charles Beardsleyname of God, If you ever told the truth, tell me where my children are," Mr. Kimbell replied, "my dear woman, the truth is all you are able to bear – your children are in a better world, I trust." Mrs. Otis was frantic, and Mr. Hull who was very powerful having the strength of three common men, had all he could do to restrain her from rushing into the flames."

Andre Otis of Trimbelle, Pierce Co. is visiting his daughter, Mrs. A.B. Redfield. Mr. Otis is an old resident of the town of Hull in this county.

I am adding something I came across in Dec. 2013. There isn't much new but I always enjoy reading in books that have family information. This comes from "History of Portage Co, WI

"March 28, 1855, Arthur B. Redfield married Miss Phebe Otis. She likewise represented a pioneer family of Wisconsin. She was born in Clinton Co. NY August 27, 1837 daughter of Andral (Andre) and Excey (Storrs) Otis. Her father was born in CT in 1800 and her mother in NY State in 1805.

When Wisconsin was still a territory they came west and settled in Dane Co. in 1844, and subsequently moved to a farm in Burnett County where Andral Otis died in 1883.(my note: Actually he died in Trimbelle, WI in 1882.) His widow survived him and passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Redfield, in Stevens Point in 1888. Andral was a democrat, but broke away from party allegiance to the extent of supporting Abraham Lincoln for President in war times. He and his wife were members of the Baptist Church, and for many years he held the post of deacon." (Actually old newspapers in NY show Andre was on a Republican committee for Saranac, NY.)

I don't have the page number but in the same book is this information.

"Arthur J. Clement: The real pioneer element of Portage Co. has some of its best representatives in Arthur J. Clement and his venerable father, William P. Clement. The latter has been a resident of this portion of Wisconsin for more than 60 years. He knew Portage when it was an unbroken forest and when Indians, bear and deer were as familiar as automobiles today. ---- In 1856 he married for his first wife Sarah Warner. --- His first wife died in Portage Co in 1863, leaving three sons: Wm. H, Frank and Alonzo.

He married for his second wife Caroline (my note: Otis) Beedle, widow of Jacob I Beedle who was killed in the Civil War. Mr. Beedle left two children, Edward and Jennie. (These would be grandchildren of Andre and Excy) Mrs. Caroline Clements was born in 1835 (incorrect date) and died June 11, 1873.

The grandson (Edger) Edward Beedle was b. 1858 in Hull, Portage, WI -d Waupaca, Waupaca Co. WI - buried in Forest Cem. Stevens Point, WI.

Edward Beedle, s/o Caroline Otis Beedle, m. Flora Joanna Redfield Jan. 31, 1880. Flora Redfield is d/o John H. Redfield and Mary Sargent. Flora was b. 1860 in WI m. Jan. 31, 1880.

She was a widow for 65 years. Leaves one sister: Mrs. L. H. McLaughlin, Clear Lake , WI, (Elizabeth Beardsley) one brother, Cord Beardsley, of Eau Clair and one daughter, Mrs. J. F. Otis.

So far it has been shown that John Otis and Betsy Butler are the parents of Aurilla, Franklin, Isaac and Robert Otis. There's further proof about Robert below.

From the book "History of Boone Co. Iowa Vol. 2:

    JULIA OTIS

Julia Otis is listed in the book "Memoir of the Otis Family in America" by William Otis as the sister of Aurilla, Andre, Franklin, Isaac and Robert Otis.

Below is copies of the information from the book by William Otis

    Andre

First I want to show that Andre John Otis is the son of John

Otis and Betsy Butler. I've also seen the name written John Andre Otis.

    "DAR member Jennie S.  Buck Nat'l #133419 Ancestor # A084848 - Jacob Beedle

    1st wife Caroline Otis b. 14 Feb. 1840 -d Jun. 11, 1872 m. Oct. 5, 1855

(Wed. Feb. 27, 1839, Tioga Eagle, Wellsborough, Tioga Co. PA)

    History of Saranac

    Burning of the Otis Children

On a bitter cold night in the winter 1839 Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Otis who resided on the hill west of the hollow attended a prayer meeting at the Hollow, and left their children at home in bed. In their absence the house caught fire. E. Kimbell and Geo. Davis were first on the ground. The house was completely enveloped in flames and between the timbers they saw the lifeless and charred forms of the children. When Mrs. Otis arrived she exclaimed, "In the name of God, If you ever told the truth, tell me where my children are," Mr. Kimbell replied, "my dear woman, the truth is all you are able to bear – your children are in a better world, I trust." Mrs. Otis was frantic, and Mr. Hull who was very powerful having the strength of three common men, had all he could do to restrain her from rushing into the flames."

In 1826 it was voted to raise $100.00 for the support of the poor, and in 1827 $200 was voted for the same purpose.

Among the Supervisors 1824- 1827 is 1827: John Otis.

In 1833 it was voted "that the commissioners of common schools and inspectors shall have 8 cents per day for inspecting schools and 4 cents for inspecting teachers.

Jay, NY is one of the places mentioned for the Otises. That area is very mountainous. Northern part of Essex Co. along western boundary, extend the Au Sauble Mountains. The southern strip of the territory contains a number of the Adirondack peaks. The entire town is elevated with the surface broken by precipitous mountains. In the valleys the soil was highly productive. Robert Otis is listed among the first settlers.

This comes from "History of Potage County" pg. 670.

Jan. 31, 1880.

This John H. Redfield was the son of Asahel (Asel) and Amilison Redfield. Children of Asahel and Amilison Redfield includes Arthur Benjamin (AB) Redfield of Portage WI.

So Flora Redfield was niece of Arthur Redfield and Phoebe Storrs Otis Redfield. Flora married the nephew (Edward Beedle) of Phoebe Otis Redfield and he was grandson of Andre and Excy Otis. Genealogy can make ones head spin sometimes.

    Edward Beedle

    Caroline Otis Beedle/Jacob I Beedle - Parents

    Flora Joanna Redfield -wife

John H. Redfield and Mary Sargent Redfield - parents of Flora.

Asahel (Asel) Redfield and Amilison Redfield - John's parents.

Arthur Benjamin Redfield s/o Asahel and Amilison. He's brother of John H. Redfield.

Flora Joanna Redfield is niece of Arthur Benjamin Redfield(A.B.)

Edward Beedle is nephew of Phoebe Otis Redfield. (A.B.'s wife).

Edward Beedle is grandson of Andre and Excy Otis.

This sounds more like the song: "I'm Mine Own Grandpa."

1860 WI Census has John Henry Redfield age 25 living with wife Mary J. age 23 and infant dau. Flora. Also in household was Amilison Redfield age 63.

    Edward's sister, Jennie S. Beedle m. Malzar W. Burk Nov. 28, 1878.

Edward Beedle and Flora had five children:

    Doris

    Florence

    Lowell

    John

    Margretta

These are great grandchildren of Andre and Experience Storrs Otis.

This comes from Mary Moss who says her grandpa: John Redfield Beetle was the child of Flora Redfield and (Edger) Edward Beedle.

"Arthur J. Clements; (Andre and Excy's grandson) only child of his father and mother's second marriage was born in Pleine Township of Portage County May 8, 1870. He was reared on the farm where he was born --- Mr. Clement's maternal grandparents deserve some special mention as having been pioneers in Wisconsin coming here when Wisconsin was still a territory. They were Andrew and Exey (Storrs) Otis of New England Stock. Andrew Otis was born in CT in 1800 and his wife in NY in 1805.They came west in 1844 four years before Wisconsin was admitted to the union."

From another source: "Arthur J. Clements b. May 8, 1870 m. Mary (Mattie) J. Seeder or Seiber in 1892. Mattie d. 1905" (Some of this info comes from 1900 census Stevens Point, WI) Mattie and Arthur had one child: Mabel Clements b. abt. 1895. (g granddaughter of Andre and Excy Storrs Otis)

Arthur m. again in 1907 - Pearl A. Yorton b. 1882 in McDill, Whiting, WI -d Jun. 17, 1907 Owen, Clack(?) Co. Wi. In 1910 and 1920 Stevens Point, WI census - d. June 2, 1925 Stevens Point, WI. Her parents: Herbert Daten Yorken b. 1848 Sullivan, Madison Co. NY _d June 2, 1925 Stevens Point and Sarah A. Shannon b. 1849 Canada.

Arthur J. Clements (grandson of Andre and Excy) worked at WI Central Railroad - began as a mere boy - brakeman, fireman - and for three years worked in the shops of the WI Central. Then he opened a shop of his own at Stevens Point for general repair of implements and other machinery - 1905 established one of the very first garages in the city.

    PHOEBE STORRS OTIS REDFIELD

Phoebe was the daughter of Andre and Experience Otis. She was born August 27, 1837 in Saranac, NY and died Feb. 6, 1924 in Stevens Point, Portage County, Wisconsin at age 86. The family went to Penn. sometime in the 1840s and then to the "far west" - Stevens Point, WI. They are listed in the 1850 Wisconsin Census. She was married to A. B. Redfield in 1854. Their home for a brief time was on the site of the Fred G. Kuhl residence property at Main and Prentice streets. They later moved to Jordan and resided there a few years.

    A. B. Redfield enlisted in the Civil War and after the war was over returned to Stevens Point, WI. His family had moved back there during the war. She was a school teacher. A.B. and Phoebe had seven children:

    Arthur Franklin Redfield

    Martin August Redfield

    Emily Adeline Redfield

    Phoebe Amilison Redfield

    John Henry Redfield

    Alfred Elmer Redfield

    Charles Elihu Redfield

Stevens Point Daily Journal 5 February 1924

"Oldest continuous resident expires. Pneumonia was fatal to Mrs. Phoebe Redfield, mother of local Postmaster. Mrs. Phoebe Redfield, widow of the late A. B. Redfield. --- surviving are one daughter and two sons: Mrs. R. F. Wyall of Springfield, MO, A. E. Redfield of the city, Charles E. Redfield of St. Louis, Mo. --- a brother of the deceased, Derwin Otis, lived at Shell Lake when last heard from."

Stevens Point Weekly Journal 29 July, 1911

    Death of A. B. Redfield

He married Miss Phoebe Otis. The latter was also a teacher and taught in school that was maintained at what is now the Jacob Hatch homestead. Mr. Redfield was among the early postal railway clerks on Wisconsin Central. He held this position until the President Cleveland administration. After retiring from that he engaged in a grocery business. He was survived by Mrs. Redfield and three sons and two daughters - Mrs. A. F. Redfield of city, John of Burley, Idaho, Mrs. O. Ostrander of Stevens Point, Alfred E. of City, Charles E. of St. Louis, MO. Martin age 6 died in 1862 and Frank, age 35, died in 1891"

This is just an interesting tidbit:

The Mormon records have Andrew Otis, female, born 1835 Brinbridge, NY; parents: Andrew Otis and Experience. Another Mormon record has: Andrew Otis, female, married Arthur Benjamin Redfield March. 28,1855 of Portage, WI. No clue anywhere to whether or not Phoebe was named Andrew Phoebe Storrs Otis or whether someone got the records mixed up.

    CAROLINE OTIS

Daughter of Andre and Experience Otis

Caroline Alvina Otis was born in 1842 in NY. She married first a Beedle.

    DERWIN NATHANIEL OTIS

Son of Andre and Experience Otis

    Wisconsin Marriages 1836-1930

Nathaniel D. Otis; spouse: Florence I. Whitten

Date: Apr. 24, 1877; Ellsworth, Pierce, WI

    Father: Andrew Otis

Mother: Atheae Otis (here's another name for Excy)

Spouse's parents: Thomas Whitten and Almada Whitten.

    1880 Census Trimbelle, WI

    Derwin Otis age 29

    Florence age 18 (wife)

    Andrew Otis age 80 –(father)

Experience Otis age 76 – (mother)

"Nathaniel Otis married Florence Isabel Whitten b 1862 Agusta, Maine d- Lafollette Twsp. Burnett Co. WI. Married April 24, 1877 in Ellsworth, Pierce Co. WI. Nathaniel and Florence are buried in Lorain Cemetery, Lorain Twsp. Polk Co. WI."

Derwin Nathaniel Otis and Florence lived in Ellsworth, WI for a while before moving to Burnett Co. WI about nine miles from Siren. (This information comes from family members of Perry Andre Otis.) The family members said Perry and brother, Alfred Otis, drove the cattle on foot the whole way from Ellsworth to Siren and beyond. Dale estimates the distance was 120 - 130 miles. Roads were few and poor at best. They moved by team and wagon.

    Some little tidbits:

Derwin Nathaniel had some business in Siren and it would take all day by horse and wagon. He took the boys, Perry and Alfred down to a patch of brush he wanted cut down. He marked off a fair amount and told them when they got through they could go swimming or fishing. Well, he left for town and the boys left for the swimming hole and then did some fishing. They thought they could cut the brush later. Before they realized it, it was almost dark. They went home and found their dad had already arrived. He asked, "How much did you cut?" Perry replied, "Some". Their dad told them they would go and check it out. The boys knew they were in trouble. When they got there and Derwin saw their efforts weren't very strong he told them they could start cutting and couldn't have supper until it was completed. Perry later said the mosquitoes near ate them up. But their dad fired up his pipe and sat on a stump and watched them work and swat mosquitoes. When they were finished they all walked home together and had supper. Perry in later years told his family that was the best lesson he had ever learned - do your work first and then play when you are through.

Another story from family members:  Perry and Alfred cut across someone's hog pasture for a short cut home. A big boar took after them. They had been hunting and Perry had the big muzzle loader. Perry said he nearly got caught with his pants down -- the old gun wasn't loaded. They were running and the hog was running after them and Perry knew he had to do something. So he poured in some powder and shot - grabbed a handful of grass or leaves and stuck them in the muzzle of the old gun - turned and fired. It was one dead boar hog. The person giving the information said someone had to pay for the hog and he thought it was Perry that did.

It seems Alfred Otis had been out hunting and came home and stood the gun in a corner of the kitchen. He then went on the roof top to help his  dad and brother, Perry, do some shingling. His mother noticed the gun - a 40-65 Winchester lever action and not ever seeing one before and thinking it looked strange, picked it up and pulled the hammer back to see if it had a cap on it. It didn't so she pulled the trigger. Well, BOOM, the gun went off and the bullet went up through the ceiling and out the roof between their dad and one of the boys. It ripped off the shingles and all three of them nearly fell off the roof. Their mother almost fainted. Alfred really got a chewing out and he said it was days before it really wore off.

The children of Derwin Nathaniel Otis and Florence Isabell Whitten

    Atkinson (Otis:

    PERRY ANDREA OTIS

Perry obtained a delayed birth certificate: "born June 3, 1883 - father, Derwin Otis - mother, Florence Isabell Whitten. Perry married to Edna Root at Lorain, Polk Co., WI May 19, 1909. A great aunt, a Mrs. H. H. Hunter of Clam Falls, Wisconsin, signed an affidavit of knowledge which was notarized on March 27, 1950." I am going to insert info about Mrs. Hunter here and then continue with Derwin Nathaniel below.

It has taken a while to unravel records and find out how Mrs. H. H. Hunter fits in the family. I think I have it straight now. In 1836-1930 WI marriages is Flora Atkinson b. Trimbelle, WI m. Nov. 17, 1892 in Ellsworth Pierce, WI. Spouse: Henry H. Hunter s/o John Hunter and Anna Gayin Hunter. Bride's parents: Cyrus (Foss) Atkinson and Hattie Lasell. I found in another record that "Hattie" is Mehitable.

Flora Atkinson b. Apr. 19, 1872 Trimbelle, WI -d Dec. 28, 1965 Grantsburg, WI. Parents: Cyrus Foss Atkinson and Mehitable (Hattie) Lasale or Lassell. Spouse: Henry Harrison Hunter.

    c. (1)Harry Lloyd Hunter, (2)Arnold Harrison Hunter, (3)Theodore Roosevelt Hunter, (4)Myrtle Rose Hunter, (5)Alfred Franklin Hunter, (6)Glen Hunter.

Now how to fit her in the family. Derwin Nathaniel Otis m. Florence Isabelle Whitten. Her parents were: Thomas Whitten and Almeda  Atkinson.  Derwin Otis' wife Florence Isabelle Whitten is listed in the 1870 WI Census in the household of Cyrus Atkinson and Mehitable (Hattie) Atkinson. Also, Florence Isabelle's sister, Mary Whitten is listed in the same household. Mehitable and Cyrus are the parents of Mrs. H. H. Hunter (Flora) and there is an Almeda Atkinson listed as a daughter of the first wife of Cyrus, Lousia Dodge Roth and Cyrus. This is Almeda Whitten) the mother-in-law of Derwin Nathaniel Otis.

If Flora (Flo) is a sister to Almeda that would make her a great Aunt of Perry an Alfred Otis. And in the 1910 WI census Derwin Otis and Florence Isabelle Otis have a Bessie Atkinson in their household. She is five years old. In the 1905 census it shows Bessie Atkinson b.1905 WI; Parents: Elisha F. Atkinson and Mary Atkinson. The father of Elisha Atkinson is, also, Cyrus Atkinson and Mehitable.

On Genealogy.com I found more info after writing the above.  It has Cyrus Foss Atkinson was married 3 times. They have Mehitable listed first, but I think she is  the last wife. It appears to me that Lousia Dodge Roth is the first wife and Clarissa Bolton is the second. He m. Lousia in 1832 and m. Clarissa in 1850.

The best I can figure the info out is the children: Thomas, b. abt. 1837; Almeda,  born abt. 1838; Elisha, born abt. 1845; and Mary born abt. 1848 belonged to Lousia Dodge Roth. The child, Clara, belonged to Clarissa Bolton and was b. 1850. The rest: Annie F. born 1855, Cyrus Foss, born 1856; Fred, born 1858; John F., born 1859; Thatcher, born 1859; Elisha (Zeke), born 1861; Lydia, born 1861; Cyrus Foss, born 1866; Jeremiah, born 1868; Melissa Judeah, born 1869; Alfretta, (Affie) born 1870 and Flora (Aunt Flo Hunter) born 1871 belonged to Mehitable Lassell.

Cyrus Atkinson - wife Lousia Dodge Roth  (Almeda Atkinson's parents)

Almeda Atkinson - husband Thomas Whitten

Florence Isabelle Whitten (dau. of Almeda) - husband Derwin Nathaniel Otis

    Flora Atkinson -  husband H. H. Hunter

Cyrus Atkinson - wife Mehitable (Flora's parents)

Almeda Atkinson - half-sister of Flora Atkinson Hunter

Almeda Atkinson - mother-in-law of Derwin Nathaniel Otis.

So that makes Flora Atkinson Hunter, half-sister of Almeda, the great Aunt of Perry and Alfred Otis the children of Derwin Nathaniel Otis.

Cyrus Atkinson would have been a g grandfather of Perry and Alfred Otis.

    Florence Isabelle Otis - mother

    Almeda Atkinson Whitten - grandmother

Her father: Cyrus Foss Atkinson - g grandfather.

Now back to Perry A. Otis.

    Mildred Otis age 12

Edna Pearl Root, Perry's wife, was of a family of eight children:

Leda, Edna Pearl, Lucile, Ethel, Frank, Grover, Lynn and Earl. Frank married Esther Johnson Otis' sister, Stella Johnson.

This information is from family members:  "Perry Andrew Otis ran a   garage and repaired cars, did welding and some machine work. He, also, sawed wood with a buzz saw he built up and it would really chew it up. Then Perry decided he was going to get out of the garage work so he built up a feed mill to grind feed for the farmers around the city. This started in 1931. First truck was a combination of 22 Buick and Model T truck. It ran pretty good. Later he had a GMC 4 Cylinder engine about a 1 1/2 ton truck. Perry had a case mill on it. He ran the mill with a DW6 Buda motor that would really chew the wood up or anything else he took a notion to grind, even rocks."

"Perry Andrew Otis also owned Twin Bay Resort on the east side of the lake 3 miles north of Isle, MN for quite a few years. It finally got too much for him to handle so he sold it."

"Jack Maciosek's  Mille Laco Adventure:  He'd frequently recall the day when rugged weather and lake conditions forced him into that special "nice little bay" where he saw an "old guy's place" (Perry Otis) with several old cabins, a small dwelling, an ice house  and a few decrepit wooden rowboats. Jack couldn't forget the setting --- "a great place for a resort" which he eventually bought.

United States, World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918

Perry Andrew Otis registered at Minneapolis City No. 8, Minnesota.    Affiliate Publication Number M1509. I think he, also, registered for the World War II Draft.

     Alfred Franklin Otis:

Son of Derwin Otis and Florence Whitten Otis.

Alfred Otis obtained a delayed birth certificate: "birth September 24, 1886 with a father named Derwin Nathaniel Otis and his mother, Florence Isabelle or just Florence Whitten. • This is just something interesting because so many, many people know of the Ingalls. From Menomonie, WI. History, Dunn Co. Asylum: "Another interesting piece of history that came out of the asylum was a patient that was there. Laura Ingalls Wilder's aunt, Julia (Bard) Ingalls resided in the asylum because of the death of her children. She was there for almost twenty years. She ended up dying there May of 1910. She was laid to rest in the asylum's cemetery."

Alfred Franklin Otis and family lived on the Otis farm in Coomer near the town of Siren, WI. Nathaniel Derwin or Derwin Nathaniel lived in the first house near the one that Alfred and Laura Otis lived in about a mile down the road. I think Derwin Nathaniel Otis built the first house after he bought 80 acres there in 1903. This was a log house.

Later a second house was built by Alfred Franklin Otis for his dad, Derwin Nathaniel Otis, across the driveway from the log house. During the removal of this second house(the one built  for his father, and at this time belonging to Russell and Esther Otis) two letters were found in one of the walls. I have them today. One is by Phoebe Storrs Otis Redfield to her sister: Amanda Otis Austin. The other one is by Amanda Otis Austin. I can't tell who it is written to. I have no idea how they got inside the wall. They are faded and torn.

Laura Otis's sister, Lillian, married William Boyer and had two sons: Billy ( William E.) (Johnny) John Boyer. After her death their grandfather, John Oliver McIntosh, provided a home for Billy and Johnny. When he became unable to continue doing this, Alfred Franklin Otis and Laura adopted Billy and Johnny.

WI Birth and Christenings 1826-1926: William E. Boyer (father of Billy and John Boyer), b. Oct 19, 1904. His parents: Jasper Boyer and Maria Riordan Boyer.

John Boyer m. Lavone Arlene Mork: Their children;  (1)Kara Jan Boyer 1965 m. Donald Lee Alden. (2) Dale Boyer 1958 m. Denise Steffen . They have a son: Nathan Alan Boyer 1981. (3)Kent John Boyer 1963 m. Wendy Bunge; (4)Linda Rae Boyer 1956 m. Michael Paul Munson. They have a daughter: Brianne Lynn Munson 1983.

    Billy Boyer: From his Obit:

Dartmouth, MA - William Edward Boyer, Jr. 61 of South Dartmouth -d at home Mar. 14, 1997 -- widower of Phyllis M. Matyianowski Boyer. They were married 40 years.

Billy was the son of William E. Boyer and Lillian J. McIntosh Boyer. He was born in Moline, IL.  He moved to Dartmouth, MA 23 years ago. He was a correctional counselor -- retired from US Navy -- served during the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was a member of Bristol Co. League of Sportsmen's Clubs -- served as president  for 3 terms -- on board of directors. Also, he was president of Rod and Gun Club of New Bedford, MA.

Billy had 3 sons: William J., Charles E., James W.; 4 daughters: Barbara J. Correia, Debra A. Giusti, Donna M. Medeiros, Joann M. McCann and a brother John Boyer, Frederic, Wi, 3 sisters: Florence Nelson, Edna Skold, Elsie Olson of Siren, Wi and 10 grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. (These are the ones that survived him)

John Oliver McIntosh lived for awhile in a building across the drive-way from the home of Russell Henry Otis and Esther L. Otis who were living in the second Otis house built on that site mentioned above.

Alfred Franklin Otis was a dairy farmer and at times he operated a small sawmill. He worked in logging in Montana for awhile. There is a picture of him near a load of very large logs taken in Montana, but I don't know where the picture is now.

One summer Dale Russell Otis and John and Billy Boyer. (They were young boys) helped Alfred Otis when he sawed logs with his mill. Alfred Otis (Dale’s grandfather) gave each of the boys a pocket watch. Another time they helped him build a two story chicken house from left over lumber. It was built in a unique way. The walls were made by laying a board flat and stacking others on top.. About every third board they drove long nails through them. The boys drove the nails in sitting straddle the stacked boards. The chicken house needed no studs nor insolation.

Dale told of a time when he was a boy about an adventure that sounds amusing if you picture it in the mind. There is a very short deer season in Wisconsin. I think it is nine days. Dale's brother, Lyle, along with their cousin, John Boyer, shot a deer deep in the woods one day out of season. They covered the deer over with snow. The next day Dale and John were working with Dale's dad, Russell

Otis' horse using a manure spreader. When they got near the woods they thought about the deer. Unhooking the horse from the spreader they rode him into the woods where the deer was concealed with snow.

Not long after they entered the woods a deer jumped up from its hiding place right in front of the horse and spooked him. They calmed the horse, but it still remained skittish.

When they got to the dead deer they removed the snow and one of them rode the horse to it. The horse got a look at the deer and began to snort.  Dale and John managed to hook the deer to the harness and John got on the horse's back. Dale was going to ride on the deer as on a sled, I guess. Anyway, the horse already nervous felt the weight and looking back saw the dead deer tied to his harness.

With wide eyes and flaring nostrils he bolted. Dale quickly grabbed hold of the deer as John was trying to stay on the horse and calm it down. Nothing worked. They went like a streak through the snow filled woods with John fighting to stay on the horse and Dale lying on the deer holding on with an iron grip. Out of the woods they went and across the snowy field. They realized that the horse was headed home as it went in the direction of the road. Their concern turned to worrying about going wildly down the road and being seen with an illegal deer.

Just before they reached the road the horse could go no further. It had already been wind broken at an earlier time and couldn't endure running a longer distance. The poor horse stood heaving while Dale and John waited a long time for it to begin breathing normally again. Then they managed to go on home. They survived their wild ride and didn't get caught with an illegal deer.

Russell Henry Otis told family members that he had heard that Austin Lake in Burnett County was named after a relative. I haven’t been able to find anything about the lake being named, yet. If it were named after a relative it might have been Andre Otis and Excy’s son-in-law: George W. Austin. George was the third husband of Amanda Otis, daughter of Andre and Excy. I have nothing on the naming, though.

           Edna Lucille Otis

Edna Lucille Otis was the daughter of Alfred Franklin Otis and Laura McIntosh. She married Robert Johnson, brother of Esther Johnson Otis. Edna and Robert had one son, Robert LaVern Johnson. When Robert LaVern was a small child his father died.(I think he died in 1943) Edna Lucille later married Karl Skold, Jr.

"Karl Skold, Jr. 92, of Siren, died on April 23, 2003 in Shell Lake. Karl was born in IL to Carl and Hannah Skold. He was united in marriage on June 11,1947 in Frederic to Edna L. Otis.

They lived most of their married lives in Siren. He was a veteran of the Army  He was in the  Landing at Normandy. He was awarded five Battle Stars and received a Purple Heart for serving during World War II  in the European Theater. After serving in the Army he worked for the Burnett County Highway Department for many years. He also ran the American Legion Post Bar in Indian Creek for four years.

Karl was survived by his wife, Edna Skold of Siren; one son, Robert (Sandra) Johnson of Corcoran, MN; sister, Signe Williams of Stillwater, MN, several grandchildren and great grand children."

Robert LaVern Johnson, the son, was b 1939. He m. Lorili Marie Bremer. Their children;(1) Mark Robert Johnson 1960; wife Sandra Christie. Their son: Mark Robert Johnson, Jr. 1986.(2) Melanie Judith Johnson 1961 m. Art.

Robert LaVern Johnson m. second: Sonja Betts. He m. third: Lucia Irene. They have three children: Zacheriah Daniel Johnson 1978; Nicodemis Seth Johnson 1980; Hannah Naomie Johnson 1980.

Robert LaVern Johnson's fourth wife: Sandra Boen.

The large amount of hay: 12 tons and 3 tons of fodder corn,

and 30 tons of corn silage is what caught my eye.

There was even a tax on dogs.

    Russell Henry Otis

Russell Otis, son of Alfred and Laura Otis, was born July 11, 1918 in Coomer, Burnett County, WI. He married Esther Lorraine Johnson Sept. 11, 1937. She was the daughter of John Johnson and Selma Dahlin. John was born in Norway and moved with his parents to the USA in ___________ settling in Polk County, WI. John and Selma had 13 children. John’s parents were Lars Johnson and Ragnild.

Russell was a diary farmer many years and a pig farmer in later years. He also held part time jobs and was on the Coomer and Siren School Boards. He was elected to the town board and then to Town Chairman of La Follette. I don’t think he ran for the Chairman position but was a write in. Some tried to get him to run for County Supervisor but he didn’t want the job. He was well liked and probably never met a person that he didn’t like. In early years he used a road grader (what I call a road machine) to keep the roads in the township in good shape. He also cut the ditches out, cleaned culverts and put up snow fence. It was hard on his back — he had back problems. He was good at building things and repairs. He was an easy going lovable person – a big lovable Teddy Bear.

I think Russell was four years old when he had to start to school. The reason being that his older sister, Edna, had to start and the parents didn’t want her to walk the distance alone so they started Russell that year, also. They attended Coomer School.

Edna had been told if they came upon a wasp nest just leave it alone and the wasps wouldn't bother her. One day on the way home they came upon a wasp nest and  Russell stirred up the wasps and he ran and told Edna to run. Edna didn't run. She just stood there and got stung by the wasps. When asked later why she hadn't run she told them that she was told if she didn't bother the nest the wasps wouldn't bother her and she said, "I didn't bother the nest. So I didn't run." Russell got a "whuppen." Dale said that his father, Russell, drove a school bus when he was 15 years old. It was a wooden bus and had a regular wood burning  heater in it to keep fairly warm in that frigid weather. I thought "oh me", a wooden bus with a wood burning heater.

In December 1937 about three months after his marriage, Russell Henry Otis and his brother-in-law, Arlie Johnson, went down the state seeking work. They went to New Richmond and stopped at Russell’s aunt’s (Lu and Dan Bell's) house and ate supper. Then they went with Clarence Sexton to Ed Barnes’ house and stayed the night. The next morning they went on to Red Wing, MN then back up the river to Diamond Bluff, Hastings and Prescott, but found no work. Next they went down on the Minnesota side to La Crosse, WI and on to Lancing, Iowa on the WI side and still no work. They started down to Ferryville, WI on the Iowa but the ferry price was 80 cents to cross there so they just kept going to Dubuque, Iowa. It was only 40 cents to cross there. From Dubuque they went to Potosi, WI. They found work on the second day there. Russell was doing axe work - trimming - and Arlie was swamping. It had to do with logging. They boarded in the town and it was only about a two miles drive to work. Potosi is a small town 20 miles north of Dubuque, Iowa on the WI side. They were to return home on Christmas Eve. I don’t think they went back. Russell began farming after that. - Source: Russell Otis letter.

Russell died of a heart attack in 1991 and is buried in the Lorain Cemetery. It was so very cold that day with snow on the ground and the wind whipping around, but the cars following to the cemetery stretched a long ways because so many people came for his funeral. It was said to be the biggest funeral in the county. His father, Alfred Otis, had many attend his funeral, also.

This comes from "History of Potage County" pg. 670.

He and his wife were members of the Baptist Church, and for many years he held the post of deacon."

Arthur J. Clements; only child of his father and mother's second marriage was born in Pleine Township of Portage County May 8, 1870.

B. Redfield and the last charter member of First Baptist Church, died on Friday afternoon at 4 o'clock at the home of her son, Postmaster Alfred E.

    Death of A. B. Redfield

"... died at his home Saturday evening July 22, at 7:45 ... resident of Stevens Point, Veteran of the Civil War, born in NY November 03, 1830, ... obtained advanced age of nearly 81 years ... exception of a few years spent at Jordan where he taught school for a time and later had charge of the Wadleigh and Walker saw mill he had resided in Stevens Point since 1853.

Robert Otis is listed in the book: "Memorial of the Otis Family in America" by William Otis as the brother of Andre. The book has a little further information on him. He moved to Trumbull, OH in the same area as the Isaac above. ( He lived there from 1847 to about 1865 in Johnston Township according to James K. The following shows that this Robert Otis was the son of  John Otis and his wife Betsy Butler.

Lineage Book National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution Volumes 57 - 58.

"Mrs. Lucy Otis Chaplin wife of George Chapin:  descendant of Robert Otis, Jr.  - daughter of Henry H. Otis and Mary L. Boscom his wife - granddaughter of Robert Otis and Lucy  Richards, his wife - g granddaughter of John Otis (war of 1812) and Betsy Butler, his wife - gg granddaughter of Robert Otis, Jr. and Lydia Otis, his wife. Robert Otis was child of Robert Otis, Sr. who served in Ct Rank: Wagon Master - b. 1696 Ireland -d post 1792 in Lyme.(Another place has 1811) His spouse Margaret Sabin."

Conducting an extensive lumberyard of which he has been a sole proprietor since 1906 ---owner of excellent farming property --- born in Michigan July 17, 1874 son of Henry H.and Mary L. Bascom Otis. His father (Henry H. Otis) passed away May 17, 1913 for a long period an honored resident of Iowa born June 21, 1838 Ashtabula Co, OH son of Robert Otis a native of NY and a grandson of John Otis who became an early resident of Empire St and removed to OH but afterward became a resident of PA where his death occurred 1846." (says Revolutionary War Vet but it was 1812 Vet.)(Another place has his death 1843, Trimbelle, WI.) I haven't been able to find a grave at either place.

Robert Otis, grandfather of our subject removed from NY to Ashtabula Co. OH 183_ til 1876 went with son Henry to Iowa - died Oct. 1894 in 85th year. His wife Lucy Otis died in Trumbull, OH 1884 age 72 years.
